The
Great Pyrenees, or Pyrenean Mountain Dog as the breed is called
in the UK, is a beautiful large, white dog [some colored markings
on the head and the body are allowed] with a "certain elegance" which
for centuries has been the working associate of peasant shepherds
high on the mountain slopes; the dog was "discovered" by
French nobility in the seventeenth century and elevated to the
status of court dog of France, where his official name is Montagne
dés Pyrenées or just " Patou ".
The dog conveys the distinct impression of elegance and unsurpassed beauty
combined with great overall size and majesty. The Great
Pyrenees possesses a keen intelligence and a kindly,
while regal expression. The Great Pyrenees belongs to
the oldest dog breeds known to us.
Since hundreds of years the Great
Pyrenees served the humans by protecting and defending
their flocks and property against wolves, bears and
other predators !
Today, in some countries, they fulfill
still this task as Livestock Guardian Dogs. But
much more the Great Pyrenees is a deeply loved
and admired Companion and Show Dog.
